The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in many restaurants experiencing waiter staff shortages. This led to a need for a virtual waiter application that could fill this gap without direct contact with customers. Piksel recognized this demand and created a state-of-the-art mobile app called "Voilà" that delivers an authentic dining experience without endangering the staff or customers. 

Voilà: Features and Improvements 

The Voilà app is designed with several features that make it a game-changer for restaurants. Technologies Used by Piksel 

Piksel uses state-of-the-art technologies to develop the Voilà app. These include ReactJS, Node.JS, Socket.io, and FingerprintJS. The company also collaborates with third-party service providers to ensure seamless functionality: 

  • Toast for menu management and ordering 
  • Spreedly for payment processing 

Challenges Faced and Solutions Found  

The development of Voilà encountered several challenges, such as customer identification, payment processing, and synchronizing external orders from the POS platform. Piksel successfully addressed these issues by creating the following solutions: 

  • Anonymous user identification was streamlined by accurately identifying visitors across all browsers and devices. This solution involved an additional modal to allow anonymous users to enter their first name and an expiration timer to archive unregistered anonymous users after a set time period. 
  • Synchronizing external orders from the POS platform was done by identifying anonymous users with their customer/guest ID. The servers then matched the user ID with the new additional order items. The external item shows up on the user order round list after refreshing the list. 
  • Payment selection and admin status view was improved with a more visible checkout process that allows for paying for oneself or a companion at the same table. The receipt issue was resolved, and the process now allows everyone to receive their receipts separately. Additionally, a timer was set to prevent multiple guests from starting the payment process simultaneously. The admin panel was also updated to give restaurant owners better monitoring and filtering options based on order status.
